Optimizing Health and Wellness with Shiatsu

By Michael Swinarski

I have met many people who tell me that they are already exercising and eating healthy so they don’t believe bodywork like shiatsu has anything to offer. My challenge to anyone who feels this way is to try a shiatsu session and experience how this simple pressure-point massage can help optimize health in multiple ways. It goes beyond just eliminating aches and pains.

Shiatsu works on various aspects of health in every session. It uses techniques to reduce tension in overworked (read stressed and tired) muscles, giving these areas time to relax and restore themselves.  It uses deep pressure techniques to benefit the nervous system, promoting better physical awareness and regulating organ function. It helps calm the mind and prevents any mental stress from being stored in the body (e.g. “I carry my stress in my shoulders”). Applications of shiatsu for optimizing health are always done as full body treatments in order to help the body integrate as a whole. My clients experience relief from a variety of complaints including headaches, back pain, insomnia, and sciatica. Each session is customized, and clients will be shown techniques to take home to enhance healing.

Because of this balancing and optimizing nature, shiatsu can help you attain more with your current health and wellness goals. I recommend a minimum of four sessions each year—one every time the seasons change—to keep your body in optimal health. The maximum benefit comes by receiving monthly sessions to achieve better health and movement.
