How to Help Relieve Migraine and Other Headache Pain

By Holly Merchant

Did you know migraines cost over $50 billion in lost wages and medical expenses each year? Women experience migraines more often than men, and migraines have been linked to genetics.

There are several known migraine triggers.

  • Certain foods, including red wine, cheese, chocolate, coffee, tea, and MSG
  • Stress
  • Hormonal shifts

Other types of head pain include cluster headaches and sinus headaches.

  • Cluster headaches are extremely painful headaches that occur in clusters of time that can last weeks or even months, and then are followed by a period during which there are no headaches. Cluster headaches affect more men and are relatively rare.
  • Sinus headaches are caused by too much fluid in the skull, especially in the hollow cavities between bones.

We have several suggestions to help you get relief from headaches.

  • Lie in a dark, quiet room.
  • Place an ice pack on the head to help decrease extra fluid while also placing a heat pack lower on the body, such as at the base of the spine or on the feet, to help draw the fluid out of the head.
  • Drink lots of water to hydrate and detoxify.
  • Receive regular massage, CranioSacral, or acupuncture treatments. Because they keep the muscles that surround the bones and the blood vessels in the neck and head loose, these treatments have been proven to reduce the severity and chronicity of headaches.

A study done at the University of Grenada has shown that “the physiological and psychological state of patients with tension headaches improves within 24 hours of receiving a 30-minute massage.” (Science Daily, July 11, 2010)  What does this mean? It means that you will have better mind and body function.  Don’t suffer any longer. Call today to learn which service may be best for your headache relief.
