How To Relieve a Headache

By Pat Bien

Headache pain can range from bothersome to devastating. Headaches can have many causes such as hormone imbalances, circulation problems, stress/tension, sinus problems, sugar imbalance, spinal misalignments, and blood pressure issues. While many over-the-counter pain relievers and even prescription medications are available, it’s so much better if relief can be attained without drugs.
Here are a few tips that can be used to relieve headaches without having to take medication.

Get enough sleep Sleep is an easy and appropriate solution because sleep can help relieve headaches and refresh the body.

Stay hydrated Dehydration (or lack of body fluids) can cause headaches along with dizziness. By drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day, you may be able to prevent headaches caused by dehydration. Besides drinking water, headache sufferers should also consume foods that are sufficient to stabilize body functions, such as fruit and vegetables.

Massage Having a relaxation or stress-relief massage will help to alleviate the tension and tightness in the neck, base of skull and upper back. Massage will also help increase circulation in the body and to the areas of tension.

Aromatherapy Essential oils can promote circulation and decrease inflammation responses. Peppermint and lavender are two such essential oils that may help. Adding aromatherapy to your massage session or having the Raindrop Technique done may help relieve headaches.

From the Essential Oils Desk Reference: “Placebo-controlled double-blind crossover studies at the Christian-Albrechts University in Kiel, Germany, found that essential oils were just as effective in  blocking pain from tension-type headaches as acetaminophen (i.e., Tylenol).”
